“Authorization failed”, “invalid credentials”, “login failed”, or a bare 401 or 403: all of these mean the server did not accept your login. The cause is nearly always one of six things, and most take a minute to check. This guide works through them in order of likelihood.
What the error actually means
Players word it differently, but they are reporting the server’s response. According to MDN’s reference for HTTP status codes:
- 401 Unauthorized means the request lacks valid authentication credentials, in other words the login was missing or wrong.
- 403 Forbidden means the server understood the request but refuses to authorise it. Logging in again does not help unless something about your access changes.
In IPTV terms, a 401-type error usually means wrong details; a 403-type error often means the account is not allowed to connect right now: it has expired, is suspended, or has reached its connection limit. Our guide to streaming error codes covers the other codes you may see.
1. Check the details character by character
Typing on a TV remote causes most login failures.
- Server URL: must include
http://orhttps://and the port if your provider gave one (for example:8080). - Username and password: both are case-sensitive.
- No spaces before or after any field, a common problem when pasting.
- Look-alike characters:
0(zero) andO,1andl,Iandl.
If your player can receive input from a phone, use it to paste the details rather than typing.
2. Use the right protocol
Some servers accept only http://, others only https://. If one fails, try exactly what your provider sent and nothing else. Do not add www. or extra paths.
3. Confirm the account is active
If the login worked before and suddenly stopped, the most likely reason is that the subscription expired or the account was paused. Some players show the expiry date on the account screen after an Xtream Codes login; see what an Xtream Codes login is.
4. Check the connection limit
Every plan allows a certain number of simultaneous connections. If more devices are watching than your plan allows, new logins are refused, often with a 403-style message or “maximum connections reached”.
- Close the player on other TVs and phones, including apps left running in the background.
- Wait a few minutes; some servers take time to release a connection.
- Remember that a stream you cast from a phone may still count as the phone’s connection.
Simultaneous streams explained covers how limits work. If you suspect someone else is using your login, see how to protect your streaming account.
5. Test from another network
Some networks block uncommon ports used by streaming servers, especially mobile networks, workplace networks and public Wi-Fi.
- If the login fails on mobile data but works on home Wi-Fi (or the reverse), the network is filtering the connection.
- A VPN can also cause logins to fail if the server rejects traffic from VPN addresses; test with it switched off.
6. Remove and re-add the profile
Players sometimes cache old details or a stale token.
- Delete the profile or playlist in the player.
- Clear the app’s cache (and data if needed). Our cache guide shows how on Fire TV and Android TV.
- Restart the device.
- Add the login again from scratch.
Still failing?
Contact your provider with:
- The exact error message (a photo is ideal).
- The player app and version, and the device.
- Whether the same details work on another device or player.
- The time the error happened.
Never send your password through social media or to anyone who contacts you first claiming to be support.
Quick reference
| Situation | Most likely cause |
|---|---|
| Never worked on any device | Typo, wrong server URL or port |
| Worked yesterday, fails today everywhere | Account expired or suspended |
| Fails on one device only | Details mistyped on that device, or cached data |
| Fails when another TV is on | Connection limit reached |
| Fails on mobile data only | Network blocks the server’s port |
Frequently asked questions
Why does my login work on my phone but not on my TV?
The details on the TV were probably entered differently, often a missing port, an extra space or a look-alike character. Copy them from the phone or your welcome email again, or remove the profile on the TV and add it fresh.
Can a VPN cause “authorization failed”?
Yes. Some servers reject logins from VPN addresses or from too many locations. Test with the VPN off.
My login worked yesterday and fails everywhere today. What happened?
The most likely reasons are an expired subscription, a changed password or a temporary server problem. Check your account status, then contact your provider.
Summary
Check every character of the server URL, port, username and password, confirm the account is active, close other devices to stay within your connection limit and test on another network. Cobra IPTV customers will find the exact fields and formats in the Cobra IPTV troubleshooting guide.
