LG Smart TVs run webOS and get their apps from the LG Content Store, not the Google Play Store. That means fewer IPTV players to choose from, and the right one depends on your TV’s model year. This guide shows how to install a player, add your playlist and solve the problems LG owners run into most often.
Before you start
- Sign in to your LG account. LG’s help library says you must be signed in to install apps.
- Check the internet connection under Settings → All Settings → General → Network.
- Update the TV software so the Content Store and player apps run correctly.
- Know your webOS version. Older webOS versions may no longer receive new apps or updates. Our guide to finding your TV’s operating system shows where to find it.
How to install an IPTV player from the LG Content Store
LG describes the process as:
- Make sure you are signed in to your LG account.
- Select the Search icon at the top-right of the screen.
- Type the name of the app and search.
- Select the app in the results, then select Install.
- After installation the app appears in your launcher’s Apps area.
You can also browse: the Content Store usually appears as a shopping-bag icon in the home launcher.
Before installing, read the description for supported login types (Xtream Codes and/or M3U), TV guide support and pricing. Many webOS players charge a one-off or yearly licence after a trial. Our article on free vs paid IPTV player apps explains what you usually get for the money.
Adding your playlist
Depending on the player, you either:
- Enter details on the TV: the Xtream Codes server URL, username and password, or the full M3U link; or
- Use device-ID activation: the app shows an ID or MAC address, and you enter your playlist on the developer’s official website from a phone or computer.
If you are new to playlist formats, what is an M3U playlist? explains the structure, and what is an Xtream Codes login? covers the alternative.
Problems LG owners often see
The app is not in the Content Store
LG suggests checking your network settings and your LG service country setting, and confirming that your TV meets the app’s requirements. Available apps differ by region and model year. If the player is still missing, choose another one that is listed for your TV.
“Not enough space” when installing
LG TVs have limited storage. Delete apps you do not use to make space, then try again.
The player freezes or closes
- Restart the TV completely (not just standby).
- Check for an app update in the Content Store.
- Reinstall the app and add your playlist again.
Some channels play, others show a black screen
The TV may not decode a particular video format, or the player may need a different setting. Try another channel, then check the player’s settings for a decoder or stream-format option. Our guide to player settings explains what each option changes.
Should you add a streaming device instead?
webOS players are improving, but an inexpensive streaming device often gives you more choice, faster menus and longer software support. If your LG TV is several years old, compare the options in Smart TV apps vs a streaming stick.
Tips for smoother playback on LG TVs
- Wired connection: use the TV’s LAN port if possible.
- Router placement: keep the router within a room or two if you rely on Wi-Fi, and prefer the 5 GHz band.
- Restart fully now and then. Fast-start features keep the TV in a low-power state so it wakes quickly; unplugging the TV for a minute clears glitches that standby does not.
- Check your speed against what HD and 4K need in our internet speed guide.
Frequently asked questions
Can LG TVs use the Google Play Store?
No. LG Smart TVs run webOS and use the LG Content Store. If you need an app that is only on Google Play, add a Google TV or Android TV streaming device.
Do IPTV apps on LG TVs cost money?
Many webOS players are free to try and then charge a one-off or yearly licence for each TV. Check the listing and the in-app information before you start a trial.
Can I install apps on an LG TV from outside the Content Store?
Developer modes exist for app developers testing their own software, but they are not a safe or supported way to install apps from unknown sources. Use the Content Store, or a streaming device with a bigger app store.
Summary
On an LG Smart TV, sign in to your LG account, install a webOS player from the Content Store, then add your playlist on the TV or through the developer’s official activation page. If apps are missing or slow on an older TV, a streaming device is a cheap and effective fix. For a device-by-device overview, see our compatible devices page.
